Fiji's sports minister, Isireli Leweniqilia, has been refused a transit visa to travel through the United States on his way to the Commonwealth Games in Manchester.

The Fiji Times says Mr Leweniqila has declined to comment.

But the newspaper says when the minister went to the American Embassy in Suva to question the visa refusal, he was shown a picture of his involvement in the May 2000 coup and the ensuing political crisis.

He was not charged with any offence linked to the coup and will now travel to Manchester through Sydney.

Last month, the Minister for Lands, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, was refused a visa to travel to the United States for meetings, but the decision was later reversed.
