Samoa village poised to replace MP

10:32 am on 19 July 2002

Lepea village in Samoa has chosen an orator, Lepou Petelo II, to be the next member of parliament for the Faleata East electorate.

This comes after parliament elected MP Faumuina Anapapa to the three-member Council of Deputies which is the body in charge of duties if the head of state is unavailable.

Faumuina had become MP in line with a deal on a consensus among the constituency's villages that he should stand unopposed.

If the terms of that deal are upheld, Lepou Petelo II, is expected to join parliament.

A deadline is yet to be announced should any other candidates want to stand and contest a by-election for the Faleata East seat.
