Japan has agreed to give Solomon Islands 40-thousand US dollars worth of basic medicines to offset shortages in hospitals nationwide.

A contract for the emergency supply was signed by the Japanese charge d'affaires, Kiyoshi Takahama, as George Atkin reports.

"Mr Takahama says Tokyo has come to render the assistance after learning about the medicine shortage in both hospitals and clinics throughout Solomon Islands. Meanwhile clinics in Honiara are being hit by another problem this time it is water following the shutdown of a water supply source by disappointed Guadalcanal landowners. The landowners shutdown the Congulai water supply source situated on the western outskirts of the capital Honiara because the government has been unable to pay them outstanding water leases. The Honiara city council which runs the clinics says the health centers may have to closedown if the water supply source remains unopened"
