Forum fact-finding mission arrives in New Caledonia

8:35 am on 23 July 2002

The New Caledonian president, Pierre Frogier, has met a ministerial delegation from the Pacific Islands Forum despatched to study for one week how the Noumea Accord on greater autonomy is being implemented.

Mr Frogier says the visit - the sixth Forum visit since 1991 - is no form of control of the situation in New Caledonia.

He says New Caledonia must have the pride to let the Pacific know what the country is up to and also show its willingness to blend into the region.

The Forum team is made up of Fiji foreign minister, Kaliopate Tavola, Solomon Islands foreign minister, Alex Bartlett, and Nauru's interior minister, Ross Cain.

It's expected to report on its findings to the Forum meeting in Fiji next month.
