Air Pacific flights cancelled for today

10:20 am on 24 July 2002

All Air Pacific flights have been cancelled for today.

Flights to Melbourne and Sydney scheduled to depart at 8am and 8.25am were cancelled and Radio Fiji reports that hundreds of passengers who had already arrived at the airport to check in, had to be booked into nearby hotels.

Air Pacific has chartered a Boeing 747 from Qantas, which is a major shareholder in the Fiji airline, to fly out these passengers at 7.25 tonight.

Meanwhile, striking workers have accused Air Pacific of putting office staff dressed as passengers on some flights.

The strikers claim once the flight is airborne, the staff change into uniforms and serve as cabin crew.

The Fiji Airline Pilots Association is reported to have asked its members flying for Air Pacific to check the validity of each cabin crew member.
