High profile Marshall Islands public servant dies

The Marshall Islands government has declared a week of national mourning to mark the death of a high-profile public servant who served his country for five decades.

Oscar deBrum, most recently chairman of the Nuclear Claims Tribunal died on Tuesday at the age of 73.

In an obituary, the Marshall Islands Journal says Mr deBrum's most enduring quality was his diplomatic skill at bringing together feuding parties and initiating dialogue among people who otherwise wouldn't have been talking to each other.

President Kessai Note has declared a national week of mourning with flags to be flown at half mast until July 31st.
