Decision over PNG's Highland electorates still to be made

Papua New Guinea's electoral commissioner, Reuben Kaiulo, has decided that there will be no results released from the Southern Highlands or Enga for the time being.

He says he is still receiving reports from returning officers in those areas and will make a further call on voting in the next couple of days.

The High Court has said it is up to the Electoral Commissioner to decide whether to call for an extension of the poll, or to have a supplementary elections held in the troubled Highlands provinces.

Voting in these areas was marred by violence, voter intimidation and the theft of ballot boxes.

The results of 91 or Papua New Guinea's 109 seats have been declared so far.

National Alliance, the party of PNG's first prime Minister, Sir Michael Somare, is still in the lead over the People's Democratic Movement of the incumbent leader, Sir Mekere Morauta.

At the end of last week, the High Court ruled that parliament could sit next Monday without members form the Highland provinces.
