Losing PNG election candidate David Unagi files petition against Electoral Commission

10:29 am on 30 July 2002

A losing candidate in the Papua New Guinea election, David Unagi, says he will take the Electoral Commission to court for failing to count two ballot boxes in the Moresby North East electorate.

Mr Unagi told the Post Courier newspaper that his action is not directed against the other candidates but says the commission made a mistake by not countring two boxes.

He says Casper Wollom's winning margin was just over 11-hundred votes but the number of uncounted ballot papers aws nearly 19-hundred.

Mr Unagi says the error was such that the result has been affected.

No date has been set for a hearing.
