Independents may outnumber National Alliance coalition

The spokesperson of Papua New Guinea's Independent MPs says they could lead the new government coalition.

Sir Michael Somare's National Alliance, as the most successful party in the poll, has been given until Monday to find the numbers to form a government.

The National Alliance currently has 18 seats while an agreement with seven other political parties gives it a coalition of 49.

And the party says it is confident of finding the remaining 5 seats needed for a parliamentary majority.

However Milne Bay Governor and spokesman for the independents, Timothy Neville, says there are 16 independents and smaller parties are expressing an interest in aligning with them.

The independents are currently discussing their options, which are to join the National Alliance, or to form their own coalition.

He says the independents do not want to be swallowed up by the main parties and are considering the possibility that they could run the country.

"At the moment, NA have eighteen. If we go over that and we are required to come and form the government on either side, why not the possibility of the Prime Minister coming from this particular group for the first time in history. Where independents were just one off, all of a sudden, they could be in total control."
