The secretary of the Solomon Islands Public Employees Union, Clement Waiwori, says that the government should step down if it cannot address the growing financial crisis.
Mr Waiwori says while his members are now due more than a month's wages they have withdrawn threats to strike.
But he says the government has to make the paying of wages a priority.
And Mr Waiwori says the government is wrong if it thinks making 1300 public servants redundant will solve its financial problems.
He says the government should be honest and tell the nation it is broke, and step down if it can't offer any solutions.
