10:52 am on 1 August 2002

PNG'S Independent MPs say while they are open to negotiations with the country's two main political parties they will not commit fully to any of them.

The 16 independents and smaller parties are currently in Kimbe to discuss their options in the formation of a new government.

The governor of Milne Bay and independent MP spokesperson, Timothy Neville says they will not decide who they will align themselves with until what he calls the 11th hour.

"We are certainly not leaning in any one particular direction at all - we're just taking the middle of the road and waiting for the two parties to sort themselves out. There are a lot of numbers that are still moving around, that are very loose. Until they actually form into a government or form into a party we're not prepared to make a decision or make a move."
