Fiji Human Rights Commission to help Silatolu prepare defence bid

4:43 pm on 1 August 2002

The Fiji Human Rights Commission is to help the coup accomplice, Timoci Silatolu, prepare a submission to secure state aid for his defence in his treason trial.

It follows the continued refusal of the Legal Aid Commission to provide assistannce to Silatolu because he has sufficient assets to pay for his own defence.

But Radio Fiji reports that the commission director, Makareta Waqavonovono, has told Silatolu, to make a written submission.

The director of the Human Rights Commission, Dr Shaista Shameem, is to help Silatolu prepare the submission.

She has asked that Silatolu be kept in the court premises today rather than be returned to Nukulau Island so she can consult him more easily.

The case has been adjourned until Monday.
