Lands officer misappropriated funds in Vanuatu

4:24 pm on 2 August 2002

The ombudsman in Vanuatu has found that a lands officer on Santo island produced false accounts and misapproriated public funds.

In a report, the ombudsman's office says the Luganville lands officer, Jeremiah Lingi, used his position for personal gain by not producing proper receipts.

He is accused of failing to give a receipt for 350 US dollars while retaining a cheque for too long to be recognised by the banks.

The office says Mr Lingi should be disciplined.
