Niue opposition MP urges government to reveal plans to fix budget blowout

9:58 am on 3 August 2002

The Opposition in the Niue Assembly says the Government must quickly go public with how it will solve the island's financial crisis.

The government delayed the tabling of the Budget nearly a month ago saying it needed to trim costs because of a huge shortfall.

It said than that various options were being considered such as wages cuts or shorter working weeks.

The Government is also looking at a multi million dollar investment offer from a Korean religious group wanting land to establish a holy city.

But it is still to decide what to do and Opposition MP Terry Coe says that delay is causing increasing concern on the island.
