Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Sir Mekere Morauta has attacked the electoral commissioner's decision to hold fresh elections in six highlands seats.

Earlier Reuben Kaiulo had declared nine of the 15 seats in Southern Highlands and Enga provinces, despite the destruction of thousands of ballot papers.

Sir Mekere has questioned the relationship between Mr Kaiulo and former prime minister Bill Skate with regard to the conduct of the elections.

Bill Skate has thrown his support behind National Alliance leader, Sir Michael Somare whose party holds nineteen seats and will attempt to form a government when parliament meets on Monday.
