Pledges of support for Somare Government

7:19 pm on 6 August 2002

The election of Sir Michael Somare as Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister has been greeted with pledges of support from regional leaders for the tough decisions he will have to make.

The Morobe governor Luther Wenge, whose Pipol's First Party is a member of the National Alliance coalition, says the international community can rest assured that Sir Michael was an able leader, who would not be afraid of the cost-cutting required to economically restore PNG.

The Milne Bay governor Tim Neville, says there needs to be a concentration on infrastructure and tangible development.

The Rabaul MP Dr Allan Marat has called for a change in the way PNG thinks about development, while Kairuku-Hiri MP Sir Moi Avei described Sir Michael's re-election as history-in-the-making.

Sir Moi has pledged his support and says the cycle has been completed.

He says the father of the nation has again taken the helm of PNG.
