Vanuatu Deputy Police Commissioner calls for revamped Police Services Commission

9:14 am on 10 August 2002

Vanuatu's Deputy Police Commissioner says the Government should form a new Police Services Commission, in the wake of a court ruling quashing the appointment of Mael Apisai as Commissioner.

Mr Simon says the decision by the Supreme Court to overturn the appointment was an historic day for Vanuatu.

He says it shows that senior officials cannot abuse their powers.

Mr Simon had laid a complaint over the appointment of Mr Apisai who was appointed despite not being among the original 12 candidates or on a shortlist of four.

The court ordered the 12 be re-interviewed and Mr Simon says it should be by a group uninvolved in the appointment of Mr Apisai.
