Fiji's immigration officers have detained a women known as the Mafia Queen, who is believed to be heading the people smuggling racket through the South Pacific.

Also detained are four Chinese women who she is believed to have been trying to smuggle into the United States.

The Fiji Times says all five were taken into custody after arriving at Nadi Airport on an Air New Zealand flight from Rarotonga, where they were refused entry on their way to Los Angeles.

The women are reported to have had fake US visas.

A high level investigation is underway because Fiji has been used in the past to smuggle Asians to the US.
