Fiji chief justice wants Canadian and South African judges on supreme court

9:09 am on 13 August 2002

Fiji's new chief justice, Daniel Fatiaki, wants to bring in Canadian and South African judges to hear the government's appeal against a court ruling ordering the inclusion of the Labour Party in the Qarase government.

Until now, senior judges from New Zealand, Australia, Tonga and Papua New Guinea have been hearing such cases in the supreme court.

But Radio Fiji quotes Justice Fatiaki as saying he will try and persuade the prime minister to allocate more funds so Canadian and South African judges can be invited to sit in the court.

Justice Fatiaki says the goverment's appeal is vital to the country and its political future, and it's important that top judges are brought in to deal with the case.
