8:09 pm on 13 August 2002

The Prime Minister of Solomon Islands Sir Allen Kemakeza departure for the Pacific Islands Forum was delayed today by because of strike action by civil aviaton workers.

The Forum delegation was due to travel to Suva, via Australia, this morning, but did not get away until this afternoon while civil aviation workers demanded a commitment that they will be paid all their outstanding wages by Thursday.

The strike action had affected both domestic and international services.

The Opposition leader Patteson Oti had already called on the Prime Minister not to go to the Forum but to stay and provide leadership and direction to the country.

Mr Oti says Solomon Islands is sinking by the day as it comes face to face with the reality that even the most basic services, including health and education, are falling apart.
