7:27 pm on 15 August 2002

Niue's Premier, Young Vivian, says he'll be asking New Zealand's Prime Minister, Helen Clark for an increased aid package at the Forum meeting in Fiji this week.

Niue is self-governing in free association with New Zealand which provides 3.3 million US dollars annual aid to the island which has 1600 residents.

The Niue government has been unable to pass its current budget and faces an ongoing crisis caused by overspending.

Before departing for the Fiji Forum Summit, Premier Vivian said he was hoping for a miracle and asked the nation to pray for a solution to the present problem.
