American Samoa improves phone tapping capability

7:26 pm on 15 August 2002

The government-owned American Samoa Telecommunications Authority has installed new software to tap calls in an effort to fight crime.

The upgrading is in line with last year's directive from the US justice department to identify threats to national, local and regional security.

The new software is said to use key word recognition to spot calls linked to criminality.
