French Polynesian government to subsidise Corsair

1:21 pm on 15 August 2002

The French Polynesian government has stepped in to ensure that the French carrier, Corsair, continues to fly from Paris to Papeete.

Corsair had announced that it would no longer fly the route but the French Polynesian president, Gaston Flosse, said this would be unacceptable because Corsair brings in about 25-thousand tourists a year.

After talks in Paris, Mr Flosse agreed that his government would pay an undisclosed subsidy to Corsair until April when Air Tahiti Nui is expected to be ready to take over the route.

Negotiators say it is too early to reveal how big the subsidy is.
