Papua New Guinea's Electoral Commissioner, Reuben Kaiulo, has stepped aside from his position after being referred to the public prosecutor to face charges of corruption.

Mr Kaiulo, who presided over the country's recent chaotic and violent election, is accused of misconduct in office for allegedly transferring government property to a company he owned and controlled,

He says he is taking overdue leave while the accusation is investigated.

Mr Kaiulo says he is not resigning and is ready to face the Leadership Tribunal if the Public Prosecutor thinks he has a case to answer.
