Special Commonwealth conference on good governance follows Forum meeting

10:58 am on 19 August 2002

Pacific leaders will be considering principles of democracy and good governance at a special Commonwealth conference being held in Fiji today.

The session is being held in Nadi while regional leaders are in the country following the end of the Pacific Islands Forum over the weekend.

The Commonwealth Secretary General, Don McKinnon, says discussions will focus on issues facing democracy in the Pacific and how to overcome any problems:

"If the leaders all go back to their home countries and say, well there are three or four things I can do in my country to improve our democrayic credentials or our democratic institutions, that to me would suggest it is a useful exercise."
