The Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat is to attempt to secure United Nations funding to help in the fight against HIV/Aids in the region.

Leaders at the Pacific Islands Forum had to officially commit themselves to an action plan before they could apply for money from the UN backed Global Fund to Fight AIDS.

The Chairman of the Forum, Fiji's Prime Minister, Laisenia Qarase, says leaders expressed deep concern at the threat posed by HIV/Aids in the region:

"I think a lot of work will now have to focus on preventive measures so that the risk is contained and does not spread quickly, in the interests of all our people, especially the young people."
