Violence in 1987 and 2000 coups planned

The leader of Fiji's United General Party, Mick Beddoes says the violence, racial abuse and attacks against Indo-Fijians in the country's 1987 and 2000 coups were planned.

During a meeting with New Zealand hoteliers, Mr Beddoes said the actions were planned by misguided people who lacked the intellect or wisdom to achieve their goals within the constitution.

Mr Beddoes, who runs a tourism business, says doing business in a country where politicians continue to make foolish statements which harm community relations is just one of the many obstacles in working towards full recovery.

He says also that the government should let other airlines service Fiji's routes because of the vulnerable position the tourism industry was put in during the recent Air Pacific strike.
