American Samoa encouraged to diversify its economy

4:39 pm on 28 August 2002

A US Government report has recommended that American Samoa target four growth industries to diversify the economy and help the Territory towards self sustainability.

The report also is urging the US Government to take a more active role in assisting the territory to secure the capital needed to achieve the goals.

The recommended targeted industries are fisheries and agriculture, telecommunications and information technology, manufacturing, and tourism.

And it says the Territory should search for markets beyond the Pacific Rim.

Currently the Territory is very dependent on its two tuna canneries which sell most of their product in the US.
