Confusion over numbers arrested in Vanuatu mutiny allegations

11:00 am on 29 August 2002

Confusion surrounds the arrest of several senior officers of the Vanautu police and its paramilitary wing, the Vanuatu Mobile Force, on mutiny charges..

Only five officers appeared in court at an initial hearing on the charges.

Reports on Tuesday indicated 27 were to be charged following a series of events flowing from the controversial appointment last month of Mael Apisai as police commissioner.

Among those expected to be charged was the acting commissioner Holi Simon who had laid a complaint over the appointment.

However as of late yesterday he had not been arrested, but the Governnt announced that he was no longer acting commissioner and had been replaced by Major Arthur Caulton from the VMF.
