Newspaper strike in French Polynesia settled

10:50 am on 30 August 2002

Reports from French Polynesia say a settlement has been reached in a dispute which has left the territory without its two daily newspapers since the beginning of last week.

The Tahitipresse news agency says an agreement was reached yesterday between the publishing company and the five unions which have been on strike for better pay and conditions.

No details have been released but the Depeche de Tahiti and the Nouvelles de Tahiti are expected to resume publication shortly.

The two papers belong to the French Hersant group and are among its most profitable publications.
