Vanuatu's suspended former police chief

Vanuatu's suspended police chief, Holi Simon, says police and the government are looking for other solutions after unsuccessful attempts this week to arrest 27 senior officers on mutiny charges.

Seven officers have so far been charged and are due to appear in court again next Friday.

They are out on bail.

The new acting police commissioner, Arthur Caulton, says he expects the remaining twenty to be summonsed by the court.

Yesterday, all 27, including Mr Simon, were suspended.

The Government is adamant that the police action in arresting 15 senior officials earlier this month was mutinuous.

But the opposition leader, Willie Jimmy, calls the charges outrageous, because he says the police had not arrested any member of the government.

Mr Caulton meanwhile says there is a risk of the police force splitting.

"But if we work together with the chiefs and the community leaders we can actually arrive at similar conditions so that we can come together again."
