Niue's Assembly finally passes its budget

9:21 am on 31 August 2002

After three days of debate the Niue Assembly has passed a budget trimming a 9 hundred thousand US dollar deficit back to less than seven hundred thousand dollars.

It comes after the Government last month announced it was delaying the Budget because of the size of the deficit.

A tough measure brought in three weeks ago was rejected at the first reading.

A modified version was prepared for this week but Premier Young Vivian points out that there are still widespread cutbacks.

"we have cut out all the capital items, we have cut out the allowances, overtime, we have reduced assistance to youth groups, womens groups, sports,, we have reduced a number of things like that"

Young Vivian says the government is also looking to reduce spending wherever possible.
