Fiji treason trial may be delayed until next year

9:25 am on 31 August 2002

A report from Fiji says the treason trial of the May 2000 coup accomplice, Timoci Silatolu, is now likely to start next year.

Justice Andrew Wilson had given Silatolu's new state-funded lawyer, Sevuloni Valenitabua, eleven weeks to prepare for the case

But Mr Valenitabua says he will not be available for the case until next year due to existing commitments.

Justice Wilson has adjourned the case until November 15th when the date for the fresh start of the trial will be decided.

Silatolu's original lawyer, Kitione Vuetaki, withdrew from the case on the morning it was due to start in early July after his name was discovered in coup-related documents seized from the home of Silatolu's coup accomplice, Josefa Nata.
