Moves to extend PNG Defence Force operations in Southern Highlands

9:19 am on 7 September 2002

Papua New Guinea's internal security minister, Yawa Silupa, is to ask the cabinet to extend the Defence Force call-out which expired last month for another six months to enable police and the Defence Force to restore law and order in Southern Highlands province.

Mr Silupa says the police alone are unable to control the lawlessness in the province

Earlier, Inter-Governmental Relations Minister, Sir Peter Barker said the government could lose as much as 15 million US dollars in revenues from Hides Gas and the Porgera mine if the chaotic situation in the province continued.
