Solomon Islands govt makes new compensation payouts

9:15 am on 7 September 2002

This morning, the Solomon Islands government will pay out some of hundreds of compensation claims for losses incurred during the two years of ethnic conflict in the country

Nearly 2 million US dollars is being paid out today with at least one bank in Honiara opening specially to deal with the payout.

A second round of payments has been scheduled for Monday morning.

Yesterday, police in Honiara, were placed on high alert as crowds gathered outside the Ministry of Finance and the Prime Minister's Office awaiting the payout.

The cabinet is reported to have spent yesterday discussing and revising the list of claims which is believed to far exceed the amount of money the government has available.

An earlier payout raised considerable controversy with key politicians receiving large payments.
