Hunting Pacific Pigeon in American Samoa could resume

4:46 pm on 16 September 2002

The Department of Marine and Wildlife Resources in American Samoa plans to experiment with limited hunting of the Pacific pigeon or Lupe.

Hunting the bird was banned in the early 1990's following the devastation caused by hurricanes Val and Ofa, which nearly wiped out the Lupe population.

The Pacific pigeon is considered a delicacy in the Samoas.

The government agency plans to conduct the experimental Lupe hunt early next month and will use the information collected during that time to determine if a regular season can be re-established
