Fiji town councils determined to collect outstanding local body taxes

Fiji's Local Government Association says landowners in the country's urban areas owe more than a million US dollars in rates.

The Daily Post reports that the association says the arrears must be paid despite calls from the Native Land Trust Boards or NLTB that they be written off.

The Association's general secretary, Anil Singh, says a meeting has been held with all town mayors, clerks and the government represented, to discuss ways to recover the money.

Mr Singh says another major breakthrough for the Local Government Association was the Land Transport Authority Act which gives councils new powers to prosecute traffic offenders and serve infringement notices.

Mr Singh says this will mean a lot of traffic offences occurring on city streets will now be a thing of the past.
