The President of French Polynesia, Gaston Flosse, has said the environment, road safety and job training will be the top priorities for his government next year.

In a speech to the French Polynesian Assembly at the start of the debate over the budget for 2003, Mr Flosse said road safety needed to be improved as traffic accidents claimed the lives of more than sixty people a year.

Mr Flosse said the government planned to introduce incentive scholarships to encourage young people to continue their studies.

He also emphasised the importance of a close partnership with the French state.
