Papua New Guinea's national executive council has appointed Joshua Kalinoe as the new chief secretary to government to replace Robert Igara.

Mr Kalinoe is a former secretary for commerce and industry and until his new appointment was the company secretary of the Stettin Bay Lumber Company for four years.

Meanwhile, the new secretary for planning and implementation is Valentine Kambori who is the current director-general of the National Agriculture Research Institute.

The prime minister, Sir Michael Somare, says no other appointments have been made, denying speculation of wholesale changes being considered.
