The American Samoa government has agreed to pay a 400-thousand US dollar settlement to the landowners of a property being used as a landfill in Futiga.

The government has now asked the Fono to approve an initial payment of 75-thousand dollars to satisfy the agreement.

Governor Tauese Sunia has told the Fono that while the settlement is large, the resolution significantly reduced the government's trial exposure.

Tauese says the initial payment will be funded from the Department of Legal Affairs' claims and damages fund.

He says for the balance, additional appropriations will be necessary once a funding source is identified.
