Call for more international airfields in Solomons

3:37 pm on 30 September 2002

The Solomon Islands tourism minister has announced a seven-man Japanese delegation will arrive in the country in November to assess possible further developments at Honiara's Henderson International Airport.

Our correspondent says the news has caused considerable interest with numbers of people writing to local newspapers suggesting alternative ideas.

Many of the writers say that rather than looking at ways to extend Henderson Airport, the government should consider the construction of three more international airports to enable tourists to fly direct to Western, Makira and Malaita provinces.

There has been no government response to the suggestion.
