Solomons government warns against strike by teachers

11:15 am on 8 October 2002

The Solomon Islands education minister says teachers who go on strike will have their pay docked.

Mathias Taro says plans by the Solomon Islands Teachers Association to strike on Wednesday over wage arrears will breach an understanding that the government will pay outstanding arrears when funds become available.

Mr Taro says teachers who strike during the Fifth Form examinations, commencing today, will be penalized while students who do not sit their exams will not gain entrance into the sixth form.

He says this week, teachers will be paid their current wages but not the arrears and those who strike will be financially penalized.

"Government will pay salary arrears as and when finances are available because at the moment we have a problem with our cash flow and it happens that by Wednesday the teachers go on strike then it is our role to make sure that the teachers will be penalized in terms of deducting their salary."
