The National Psychiatric Unit in Solomon Islands has been closed and its more than 30 patients have been sent away to be with their families.

The director of medical services Malaita province, Dr Judson Leafasia, says the unit had to be closed because of the lack of facilities, medicine, doctors and nurses.

The patients had come from all over Solomon Islands.

The psychiatric unit on Malaita is part of the Kilufi hospital which has re-opened for outpatients after the public raised funds for it.
