Moves are reported to be under way in Fiji to establish an Indian wing of the prime minister Laisenia Qarase's ruling SDL party to boost its Indo-Fijian support.

The Daily Post reports that some prominent businessmen in nadi, led by dentist Mohammed Yunus and a former mayor, have already held talks with Mr Qarase to launch an Indian wing in December.

Mr Yunus has confirmed meeting Mr Qarase and is quoted as saying it does not need a politician to take a positive step for reconciliation.

He says the establishment of such a wing would help because of a lot of problems and discrmination have emerged.

The newspaper says efforts to form an Indian wing are under way in all major Fiji centres, which would be modelled on the Indian Alliance 30 years ago that had aligned itself with the then prime minister, Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara.
