Niuean minister delays visit to Tonga to discuss airline arrangements

7:06 pm on 15 October 2002

Niue's minister of finance, Toke Talagi, has delayed a visit to Tonga to discuss with the government flights to the island by Royal Tongan Airlines.

The minister, who's postponed the trip because of illness, says talks will be held government-to-government to see if an arrangement can be made for RTA to code share with Polynesian airlines.

Currently RTA flies three times a week to Niue but that finishes at the end of this month and Polynesian airlines will then provide a service once a week to Niue with the inaugural flight on October 25th.

Mr Talagi says the Niue government would like to see Royal Tongan airlines continue because of the potential tourism benefits but had no plans to offer money in persausion.

"We had not considered any subsidy of any kind although those matters would probably have arisen and we would've discussed those as well, but at this particular point in time, there was no intention on our part infact to make any particular offers of that kind to royal tongan airlines or infact polynesian airline, who approached the arrangement between tonga and niue."
