New Zealand to help fund retrenching of Solomon islands public servants

The New Zealand government has committed over 900 thousand US dollars to the Solomon Islands government redundancy programme.

New Zealand is the first country to indicate its support for the programme which will see 13 hundred public servants laid off at a cost of about seven million US dollars.

New Zealnd's commiment was made during a meeting between Solomon islands Finance Minister, Laurie Chan and New Zealand foreign minister, Phil Goff, in Wellington this week.

Mr Chan says Mr Goff assured him that New Zealand was commited to assisting the Solomon Islands with its law and order and fiscal problems.
