Cruise ship decides Solomons capital too unstable to visit

An international cruise ship, carrying one thousand American tourists, has bypassed the Solomon Islands capital, Honiara, without berthing as scheduled.

The Californian tour operator says it cancelled the visit to Honiara because of recent disturbances and flight cancellations.

It says the tourists could have been expected to spend more than one hundred thousand US dollars on carvings and other artifacts.

The company says the ship has toured extensively in Iron Bottom Sound, where wreaths were laid in memory of American soldiers killed during World War Two's Battle of Guadalcanal.
