Samoa starts week of fasting and prayers at the start of the cyclone season

6:41 am on 21 October 2002

A week of fasting and prayers will be held in Samoa this week to ask God to protect the forests and creatures from natural and man made disasters.

Government and church leaders have urged the country to confess their sins to avoid God's wrath.

The week was set up after the devastating cyclones of 1990 and 1991.

The Secretary of the National Council of Churches, the Reverend Fepa'i Koria, says the prayers and fasting have worked as Samoa has not been affected by severe cyclones for the last ten years.
