About three hundred construction workers have taken to the streets in Papeete in protest at planned lay-offs at French Polynesia's biggest construction site.
Work has been suspended at the site to build a new hospital amid a dispute between the construction company and the territorial government over cost over-runs.
A union leader says the dismissal process is against provisions of the law.
At issue is also a plan by the French construction company to bring in foreign workers while allowing it to dispatch local workers to its sites in places such as Cuba, Nigeria or Turkmenistan.
