Fiji's prime minister says Labour leader should be charged with contempt of court

Fiji's prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, says the Labour Party leader, Mahendra Chaudhry, should be charged with contempt of court.

Radio Fiji says Mr Qarase made the comment in response to a statement by Mr Chaudhry that the 2003 budget to be handed down next week would be illegal because the government preparing it is illegal.

Mr Qarase says he is disappointed that Mr Chaudhry is pre-empting the decision of the Supreme Court which will hear the case challenging the composition of the cabinet.

Mr Qarase says there has never been a court decision that his government is illegal.

Only the Supreme Court will make that decision he says, NOT Mr Chaudhry.
